At the start of the film Josephine is initially established as a teenager who is ashamed of her culture and does not want to take part in her cultures traditions like Tomato Day you can see this by her experssions and by what she says about her culture.
Josephines character is first established in the first scene on tomatoe day. The first shot we looked at today in class was a mid shot which spoke alot for itself just by the apron that she was wearing, (nona made styles).Her facial expressions appear to be upset and the vibe she doesn't feel like she belongs is potrayed. The voice overs also influence this as she rebels aginst her italian culture by making remarks such as 'national bloody wog day'.In a few short moments a lot her charactericts shine through which lead to the plot of the story..
sister Louise is established in the first shot as a woman of god. this is done by have a low angled shot of her against the background of the church. she is shown as a sturn, strong and old fashioned woman. by the way she talks moves and dresses. her wrinkled stockings. she is a caring woman and shows this when Josie gets told that John has died by ringing her hands. she speaks with a very calm and even tone which shows she is very calm and controlled.

Josephine was originally shown as an outsider in her italian family, she wanted to be a normal australian girl getting on with her life. She mentions the curse on the alibrandi women, that they are slightly outside from the rest of the family.
josephine is portraid as a teenage girl that wants to do something with her life and feels that she does not belong in her family and also believs that her mother,nona and her are cursed. by WILF 42
At the start of the film Josie is shown as a teenager who wants to rebel against her Italian heritage. She calls Tomato Day 'National Bloody Wog Day'. You see her escape from her heritage when she hops in the car with her friends.

Our first impression of Josie, as the viewer, is gained in the first scene, namely 'Tomato Day'. It was understood from the beginning that Josie viewed herself as an outsider & felt as if she did not belong, whether it was as the result of the rumored curse or otherwise. This impression was clearly established through both verbal & visual techniques.
Josie attempted to change the music from the traditional Italian 'twisting song' to something she felt more comfortable with. Josie, literaly, jumped at the chance to leave 'National Wog Day', this acted as a visual aid to create the 'not belonging' atmosphere.
