I think Jacob could see a side to Josie that John was either too blind or unwilling to see. Unlike John, Jacob & Josie were equals to some extent. Jacob did not have that overwhelming pressure to prove himself like John, (or Josie in some cases), did.
Jacob was a free spirit.Plainly put, "You [Josie] get into punch-ups with other girls, you wipe your nose with your sleeve... you're my kind of chick." It was to no suprise that Jacob found himself asking "Why are we such a disaster together?"
Josie's sense of humour may have been an atraction to Jacob. Josie was less than impressed after accepting a lift home from the ball with Jacob & soon finding that he intended for her to join him on a motorbike, in a dress nevertheless. One of my all-time-favourite quotes from the movie would have had to have been: "Just let me check my bag for ID. I don't want to be named Jane Doe at the morgue."(Josie)
After Jacob claiming "I don't meet mothers." Josie should have at least a bit understanding & less judgemental when Jacob rocked up to her front door in his 'movie clothes'. Instead Josie ditched Jacob at the cinema without even giving him a chance. Josie's expectations were too high & after storming out she spoke in voice-over "Dear Guiness Book of Records: I've just been out on a ten minute date. Is that a record?"
Jacob was the male image of Josie, he had a lower income household and only one parent, and was also slightly to one side of his other rich schoolmates such as John. He understood how there was a "missing piece of the puzzle" (thanks Elle!) and could relate with Josie.

i think Josie and Jacob are on the same level of social status, he only had one parent and he lived in a lower incoome household
