Alibrandi - John Barton

Was John Barton attainable for Josie?

Josie so desperatly desired to escape from her Italian culture. She felt contained by tradition. I respect Josie for her determination and positive outlook throughout the whole ordeal. Despite Josie pining for John's love and affection, I believe that both could have brought out a different side in one another. John was held back by overwhelming expectation from his father, Josie could have been just what John needed to give him the balance he lacked.

John obviously had feelings for Josie to some degree; take the exchange of notes for example.John expressed something along the lines of 'I can't be what you want me to be.' The note acted as closure for Josie after John's unexpected death.

(P.S I think Josie and John would have made a cute couple..after all, opposites do attract!)

I don't know who you are. I could take a punt and get it wrong - so I won't! However, I think you express some seriously good ideas here and you start exploring the relationship between Josie and John. I get the feeling that while Josie has romantic feelings towards John (if not fantasy), John sees her as some one who is on the same level academically but really is completely oblivious to the fact that Josie is eagerly anticipating him to make a move - and he was hopeless - didn't even ask her for a dance at the ball and more or less ignored her - just so polite!
Keep on writing - I enjoyed your thoughts.

I think John Barton was attainable for Josie, but not in the way she wanted. He was attainable fully as a friend but if he ever went out with her i think it would be for the wrong reasons, like he wanted freedom from his fathers name and lifestyle, he would never fully be hers and there would always be distance between them.
